Product overview

Transparent protection for premium flooring

PVC wear layer is a transparent film applied as the topmost surface layer of PVC flooring, SPC (Stone Plastic Composite), and LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) products. This layer provides essential protection against abrasion, stains, and mechanical damage while preserving the visual integrity of the decorative print layer beneath. The material is manufactured through calendering or extrusion processes with precise thickness control from 0.15mm to 0.70mm. UV stabilizers and anti-scratch additives are incorporated into the formulation to enhance performance in high-traffic commercial and residential environments.

Core advantages

Abrasion resistanceUp to 20,000 cycles on Taber abraser. Meets EN 13329 AC4-AC5 classification.

Optical clarity>90% light transmission ensures the decorative print layer remains visible.

Chemical resistanceResistant to household cleaners, dilute acids, and alkaline solutions.

UV stabilityUV absorbers prevent yellowing. ΔE ≤ 2.0 after 1000h xenon arc.

Surface texture & application details

SPC application

Surface texture

The wear layer can be produced with various surface finishes including matte, semi-gloss, and gloss to match different design preferences. Embossed textures are optionally applied to simulate wood grain or stone patterns while maintaining the protective function. The layer is laminated to the printed PVC film using heat and pressure, forming a permanent bond that resists delamination.

Anti-scratch additives are incorporated into the top surface to minimize visible damage from chair legs, pet claws, and abrasive particles. The hardness of the wear layer directly influences scratch resistance, with formulations available from 2H to 4H pencil hardness.

Frequently asked questions

What thickness is recommended for residential use?

For residential applications, 0.30mm to 0.45mm thickness is typically sufficient for areas with normal foot traffic. Light use areas such as bedrooms can use 0.20mm, while heavy traffic areas like hallways should consider 0.50mm or above.

How does the wear layer affect maintenance?

The wear layer creates a sealed surface that resists liquid penetration and stain absorption. Regular sweeping and occasional damp mopping with neutral detergent maintain its appearance. The transparent nature does not hide dirt, so visible dirt indicates cleaning is needed.

Can the wear layer be repaired if damaged?

Minor surface scratches can be buffed or filled with specialized repair compounds. Deep scratches extending to the print layer require replacement of the affected tile. For SPC flooring, individual planks can be replaced without disturbing adjacent tiles.

Wear layer vs top coat — what's the difference?

Wear layer is a thicker PVC film (0.15-0.70mm) that provides abrasion resistance and structure. Top coat is a thin liquid-applied layer (under 0.05mm) that provides surface protection. Many premium floors use both: a wear layer for durability and a top coat for added stain resistance.
