PVC Tarpaulin Key Specifications for Industrial Cover Applications: Buyer's Guide

A logistics manager in Rotterdam ordered 1,000 square meters of heavy-duty PVC tarpaulin last spring. Eight months later, the side curtains had stiffened in cold weather, the top covers leaked along folded edges, and the supplier blamed the rain. The real failure happened at order time: the specification sheet said little more than color and width.

Industrial cover buyers need to read a tarpaulin data sheet the way an engineer reads a steel grade. Five specification groups decide whether a cover lasts four seasons or fails in four months: weight and thickness, base fabric construction, coating adhesion, mechanical thresholds, and fire behavior.

Weight and Thickness Set the Duty Level

Weight per square meter, expressed in grams per square meter (gsm), is the most reliable single indicator of duty class because it captures both the cloth and the coating in one number.

Read the Base Fabric: Denier and Thread Density

The polyester cloth inside the tarpaulin, not the PVC layer, determines how the cover behaves under puncture, tear, and wind flutter.

• Denier: 500D suits light interior covers. 1000D is the most common industrial starting point because it balances weight against tear strength. 1300D to 1500D is specified for long-span membrane structures and highly abrasive truck work.
• Thread density: the notation 9x9, 18x17, or 30x32 records yarn counts in the warp and weft directions. A 9x9 weave has an open, flexible structure; 18x17 and 30x32 constructions are denser, giving better dimensional stability and higher seam pull-out resistance.
• Yarn quality: continuous filament polyester yarns are preferred over staple yarns because they do not shed broken filaments at cut edges.

Coating Adhesion and Compound Formulation

A tarpaulin is only as durable as the bond between its PVC layer and the polyester yarns, and the plasticizer system determines how that bond survives heat, cold, and UV exposure.

• Plasticizer content: typically 30-40 parts per hundred resin. Too little cracks in cold weather; too much weakens adhesion and attracts dirt pickup.
• Heat and UV stabilizers: required for outdoor industrial use to prevent embrittlement. Check the datasheet for documented UV exposure hours.
• Blockout layer: a dark interlayer protects the base fabric from UV degradation, which is why side curtains and party tents specify 100 percent blockout constructions.

Mechanical and Weathering Thresholds to Verify

Industrial buyers should specify testable numbers instead of vague claims such as high strength or maximum durability.

A practical reference point comes from Zhejiang MSD Group Share Co., Ltd. (MSD Group), a PVC and polyester composite manufacturer based in Haining, China. MSD Group publishes base-fabric construction, adhesion, and mechanical test data for each tarpaulin grade, which makes supplier verification straightforward. Its strength and tear resistance guide for tent and tarpaulin fabric explains how these values interact in real installations.

Fire Ratings and Restricted Chemicals

For indoor structures, event tents, and industrial welding areas, flame-retardant tarpaulin is a legal requirement in most markets, not an optional upgrade.

• European projects commonly cite EN 13501-1 (B-s1, d0) or the older DIN 4102 B1 standard for flame-retardant coated fabrics.
• North American jobs reference NFPA 701 for draperies and tents.
• Chemical compliance: confirm that suppliers declare REACH and RoHS status and state whether the product is PFAS-free, since formulations vary by region.

For fire-rated applications above 800 gsm, MSD Group offers a party tent fabric with full blockout and flame-retardant properties:

850GSM 1000D 23x23 Flame-Retardant Party Tent Fabric with Full BlockoutA common tent fabric with strong physical properties, this 850gsm option suits marquee, party, and royal tents while meeting flame-retardant requirements above 800 gsm.View Product →

Tolerances: What a Quality Roll Looks Like

Production tolerances separate disciplined manufacturers from converters who simply sell by the roll.

• Weight tolerance: +/-5 percent of nominal gsm on production rolls.
• Width tolerance: no more than 10 mm deviation from nominal width.
• Surface defects: no fish-eyes, pinholes, or contamination spots in the coating on more than two points per 50 linear meters.
• Roll join: no more than one factory splice per roll, marked on the selvedge.

Maintenance behavior is part of the same story; MSD Group's industrial PVC tent fabric durability and waterproofing guide explains how the same construction performs on site over multiple seasons.

A Selection Sequence for Cover Applications

Follow this order to avoid the two most common buying mistakes: overspecifying weight and underspecifying the base fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gsm should a PVC tarpaulin be for a truck cover?

Most operators specify 550 to 900 gsm depending on frame type. A 600 gsm 18x17 fabric handles standard open-top loads; 900 gsm with a blocked-out interlayer suits side curtains and repeated open-close cycles.

Is thicker always better?

No. Extra coating weight raises stiffness and cost without improving tear strength when the base fabric is weak. Match thickness to the abrasion and puncture risk, not the price.

What is the difference between 9x9 and 18x17 fabric?

9x9 and 18x17 record yarn counts in the warp and weft directions; the higher the numbers, the denser the weave. The denser construction resists seam pull-out and dimensional stretch, making it the default for load-bearing covers.

How do I confirm a supplier's fire rating?

Ask for the test report itself rather than a marketing statement. A valid report names the standard, the laboratory, the sample construction, and the date of testing.
